We had a great showing at the 14th Annual Groton Labor Day 5K on Monday, September 5th, 2011. This was the most challenging race of the year, thus far, as the pelting rain continued vigorously throughout the race. For about a half a mile along the old railroad bed, we pounced in and out of 5 inches of water, but everyone managed to get through it and work their way back through the village to the high school track and cross the finish line.
What a great surprise, as Jeremy Downs, a former Cornell University ice hockey star, blasted through his first career 5K in 20:28! It looks like he may be out to catch Mr. Xtreme!
Even with the intense weather, the race, which raised funds for the Groton cross country program, still attracted 151 participants that morning. 2011 newcomers, Terry Mattice and Ellen Leventry completed their second 5K of the season. Thank you to Groton cross country coach, Scott Weeks, and the rest of his volunteer staff for putting on an outstanding race. This race was a fantastic stepping stone for the upcoming Camp Gregory 5K on September 17th, which includes the infamous Casper Climb beginning down at the lakefront.
Thanks for everyone braving the tropical storm!
